They have a kind of silly tradition here of having an actual graduation ceremony for the fifth graders moving on to middle school. They call it 5th grade promotion. Actually, the promotion entails other things, like a pool party & a movie night and and a tshirt and a couple other events for 5th graders only. But the actual "Promotion" ceremony is much like a scaled-down graduation. Still, it's a big deal for Bub, and for many of the other kids, as some are moving, some are going to other middle schools to attend magnet programs, and others will be lost in the morass of hundreds of new peers come Fall.
Something really special that happened (that was a surprise for us as well as Bub) was that she received a Presidential recognition award for such good grades/GPA. She has worked hard, and it hasn't been easy since we moved after 1st grade.

Wudgie was so happy when she came out of the line to see him that he yelled at her. (Sorry, it's blurry, but so worth it for Bub's reaction.)
They had a nice cake reception for the parents & students afterward. I caught a quick pic of Bub with her two best buds. They are very silly together....
This is her running buddy & her constant competition for the past three years.
On the very last day of school, they do something really special. They have a "clap out". All of the kids in the school, except for the 5th graders, line the halls and clap & cheer as the 5th graders make a circuit of the school. This is right at dismissal time & celebrates their very last day as elementary students & last dismissal. It's actually pretty emotional, much more so than promotion. I could be accused of tearing up a little, though I was pretty focused on trying to get a good picture in-between the kids darting in front to poke & pinch the kids going past... :) Onward, ho!

Aaaw, the "clap out" made me tear up, too and I don't even have kids that go to school.
I can't wait for E to actually get good grades. Bub looks pretty happy and like she had a really good time. It is silly to have graduations, but the kids enjoy them and the parents too, so why not.
